Not sure what to look for in a home care provider? With different services, costs and ways of managing your care, it can be hard to know where to start.
We’re here to make it more straightforward. We’ll help you understand your options, know what questions to ask and what to look for in a provider, so you can feel confident finding the right support for you.
Providers can differ significantly in how they communicate, organise services, support their workforce and use your funding. Before choosing, look beyond the headline price and consider what the day-to-day experience will actually be like.
Ask: Will I have one person who knows my care, or will I speak to someone different every time?
A dedicated point of contact can make it easier to organise services, make changes and get answers without repeatedly explaining your situation.
At HCA: Every customer has a dedicated local Customer Care Manager who understands their care and coordinates their services.
Ask: How do you manage worker consistency and what happens when my regular worker is unavailable?
Familiar workers can make care more comfortable and reduce the need to continually explain your routines and preferences.
At HCA: We work to provide reliable services and consistent care teams wherever possible.
Ask: What qualifications and experience do your Support Workers have, and how are they trained?
At HCA: Personal care Support Workers must hold a Certificate III qualification and have at least six months’ experience. Healthcare Australia also operates its own training organisation, allowing us to continually train and upskill our workforce.
Ask: What happens if I need to change a service, schedule or care arrangement?
Your provider should have clear processes for responding when your needs change rather than leaving requests sitting unresolved.
At HCA: Your dedicated Customer Care Manager is your single point of contact, making it easy to adjust your services, schedule or care arrangements as your needs change.
Every Support at Home provider sets its own service prices, so comparing costs is important. But the cheapest hourly rate does not automatically mean the best value.
Consider what you receive for the price, including:
Ask each provider to clearly explain their published prices, how your quarterly budget will be used and any participant contributions that may apply.
Start with the care and services you’ve been approved for through My Aged Care and think about what matters most to you when receiving support at home. If you have not yet been assessed, you will need to start through My Aged Care.
Look at location, available services, pricing, workforce quality, communication and whether the provider can support your needs now and in the future. My Aged Care’s Find a Provider tool can also help you identify and compare registered providers.
A conversation can tell you a lot about how a provider operates. Ask who will manage your care, what worker consistency looks like, how quickly changes can be made and what happens if your needs become more complex.
Before commencing services, make sure you understand your service agreement, pricing, care plan and how changes or cancellations are managed. Once everything is agreed, your provider can begin organising your care.
Your dedicated local Customer Care Manager gets to know you, understands your needs and coordinates your care.
Existing HCA Home Care customers have access to our 24/7 support line, so help is available outside standard business hours.
Our Support Workers are carefully selected, qualified and experienced, with ongoing training backed by Healthcare Australia’s own training organisation.
Your home care should feel right for you. If your needs have changed, you’re looking for more consistent support, or you simply feel your current provider is no longer the right fit, you have the option to switch.
Switching providers can feel like another thing to navigate, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. HCA Home Care can talk you through the process, answer your questions and help make the transition as smooth as possible.
With a dedicated Customer Care Manager and experienced care team, we’ll take the time to understand what’s important to you and organise support around your needs.
